ABOUT THIS CARVING
Full Inscription: There is NOTHING-absolute nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. - Grahame
Origins: Kenneth Grahame’s 1908 children’s classic, The Wind in the Willows contains this famous wisdom as uttered by the Water Rat. And yes, our beautiful and somewhat whimsical carving contains the correct wording uncorrupted by time and the manipulations of the possibly well-intended. (The word is indeed “absolute,” not “absolutely.” )
We paired Grahame’s writing with a distinctive letterform as created by another Englishman of the period, prominent artist and children’s book illustrator, Walter Crane.
We feel confident Ratty or Mole would thoroughly enjoy pulling on our beautifully carved oar, an essential piece of equipment well-recognized by anyone who has ever enjoyed boating in any form. Of course, this carving is fit for prominent display in Toad Hall itself — or any hall you may inhabit. It will serve as a distinctive and constant reminder of those most blissful and memorable days spent on the water.
