ABOUT THIS CARVING
Full Inscribed Quote: The mountains are calling and I must go. - John Muir
Origins: Perhaps John Muir’s most well-known words, he penned them to his sister Sarah Muir Galloway at the close of a letter on September 3, 1873. As a youth, Muir demonstrated a seemingly innate aptitude for the workings of mechanical things. In the mountains, his deep passion for wilderness inspired him to further refine and develop this skill to further his study and understanding of the workings of nature.
The design of this carving was inspired by William Morris and his famous 1896 printing of “Kelmscott Chaucer”. The classic and universally appealing lettering style Morris designed for the book should fit nicely in most any style of home, cottage or cabin. (This carving was created in cooperation with the John Muir Papers, University of the Pacific ©1984 Muir-Hanna Trust.)
