Origins: Muir – Green Deep Woods Carving
Full Inscribed Quote: "There is no repose like that of the green deep woods." - John Muir
If spending time in the great outdoors is something you enjoy, then it is likely you have experienced the feeling John Muir captured so perfectly in this thought. There are a number of similar quotes by Muir noting the restorative power of nature and extolling others to use wilderness for this purpose. In fact, reportedly suffering from a fever, Muir had been encouraged to head to California for its beneficial climate. In a July 26, 1868, letter he wrote to his friend Mrs. Carr following his first trip to Yosemite, he reported his health had indeed been restored: “I am well again, I came to life in the cool winds and the crystal waters of the mountains.”
The lettering is a classic style created by Englishman William Morris, circa 1890, which we believe to be of nearly universal appeal. (This carving was created in cooperation with the John Muir Papers, University of the Pacific ©1984 Muir-Hanna Trust.)
