ABOUT THIS CARVING

Full Inscription: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. - John 3:16

Origins: Creating our John 3:16 carving was enlightening. For the lettering, we reached back to a very old blackletter style from 15th century England. We coupled it with a botanically-correct representation of a thorny branch from the actual plant Biblical scholars have identified as the one his Roman captors used to make the thorny crown (ziziphus spina-christi). The thorns are borne in pairs on the branch in a particularly chilling configuration with one straight and one curved, the straight thorn being approximately 7/8" in length.
