Origins: Contentment Dwells Carving
Full Inscription: "Contentment dwells with common folks, Who well their hours employ. Green fields about, blue sky above few sorrows and much joy."
We traced this rhyme as far back as a 1911 magazine, but have been unable find its original source. Since the earliest citation we found was during the American Arts & Crafts (Craftsman) period and it so eloquently captures the sentiment of the movement, we decided to carve it in a style reminiscent of the Roycrofter’s motto boards of the period.
This is the only carving we've ever created without knowing an original source. We felt compelled to do so based solely on the strength of its message about finding contentment in life's simple things, things that can be found all around us each day. In our ever more complex world, simplicity is a rare and valuable find, the importance of which must not be overlooked, but rather celebrated. And this carving is a beautiful reminder for us to drink it in.
The Arts and Crafts style letterform was created by the renowned English illustrator Walter Crane (1845 – 1915) and the rose design is also of English origin, circa 1913.
