ABOUT THIS CARVING
Full Inscription:Live in the Sunshine - Emerson
Origins: The full line from Emerson's poem, Merlins Song, reads as follows: "Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, Drink the wild air's salubrity."
Not a commonly used word today (and perhaps not then either), "salubrity" refers to the healthful effects of the fresh air. We chose to carve just the phrase “Live in the Sunshine,” not because the word “salubrity” might throw off some folks, but because the shorter phrase appeals both to those who enjoy the outdoors and those who like that it serves as a reminder to “soak in” life’s positive things. Frankly, we like it for both interpretations!
The lettering dates back to the 1870’s and is considered to be one of the most popular American-designed display typefaces of the Victorian era. We were delighted to find the complementary flower corner ornaments in an old typography catalog of the same period. Together, we believe they create a design that beautifully reflects Emerson’s sentiment.
