Plato - Knowledge Carving

GTI-PL029-6-OH

ABOUT THIS CARVING

Full Inscription: Knowledge is the food of the soul. - Plato

Origins:  This is Benjamin Jowett’s Victorian era translation of a line from Plato’s Protagoras. In his time (1817 to1893), Jowett, a professor of Greek studies at Oxford became a recognized Plato authority — often translating Plato’s works during his vacations! Plato, a student of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle is believed to have authored Protagoras after the loss of Socrates in 399 BC and prior to 387 BC.

This handsome carving will resonate with all those engaged in the pursuit of knowledge - and who will quickly recognize the timelessness of Plato’s thought.

Source: Protagoras, a dialogue, circa 380 B.C.
