ABOUT THIS CARVING
Full Inscription: AEQUANIMITAS
Origins: Renowned Canadian physician Sir William Osler’s distinguished medical career resulted in him being described as the "Father of Modern Medicine.” He began in 1872 at McGill University, accepted a position as the second of four founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1889 and, 16 years later, received a prestigious professorship at Oxford University. Perhaps chief among his many achievements was his strong belief in experiential education for physicians which revolutionized the teaching process and resulted in the medical residency system still in use today.
However, the catalyst for our carving comes from Osler’s farewell speech he delivered at the end of his service at the University of Philadelphia (1885-1889). Entitled “Aequanimitas,” his speech about the equanimity (or imperturbability) required of physicians is still reprinted for medical students today. While an essential trait of a good doctor, it is quite suitable as a motto for anyone who wants a reminder to proceed through the stresses of life with a calm mind. Created based on a beautiful and very old Roman letterform from the first century A.D., please note that we offer slightly different two versions (Latin & English). This is the Latin version.

Recommended Finish: We like the Heritage Oak finish for the sense of age it gives the piece - especially with the Latin lettering. However, the Vintage Cherry finish is also nice and works well in most any professional setting.
