Lincoln - Right Makes Might Carving

Full Inscription: Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it. - A. Lincoln

Origins: Lincoln uttered these famous words during his first speech in New York City and prior to his presidential nomination later that year. In fact, there are those who believe his Cooper Union Address to be one of his most important speeches and possibly the one which helped to cement his nomination and, ultimately, the presidency.

Befitting the timelessness of his words, we used a very old stone carving letterform used by the Romans. It was in common use carved in large public buildings of Lincoln’s time (in cornerstones and pediments) and is still in use today. The single star in the star and spear ornament references the nautical star or "North Star," an ages old navigational aid of seafarers now used to symbolize finding or knowing one’s way in life.

This carving is only available in solid quartersawn white oak, the state tree of Illinois, the "Land of Lincoln."
