ABOUT THIS CARVING
Full Inscription: Chance favors the prepared mind. - Louis Pasteur
Origins: Frenchman Louis Pasteur, perhaps best known as the inventor of the pasteurization process, first uttered his famous observation on December 7, 1854, during his very first speech as the newly appointed Dean of the Science Faculty for Lille University. While it is thought he may have said “Chance favors only the prepared mind,” his reported later usage of the phrase -and what is most frequently attributed to him- is the simplified version we have carved.
Another Frenchman, Claude Garamond designed the lettering we used for this piece, and it has been recognized as one of the most beautiful letterforms in the history of typography. We believe its clean form beautifully compliments Pasteur’s elegantly simple, but deeply profound, statement.
Anyone who recognizes the value of education, is engaged in research —or just plain thinking, will appreciate having this carving on display in their home, study, office or classroom.
