Origins: Ruskin - Life is Wealth Carving
This thought is from Ruskin’s 1860 series of essays later published as Unto This Last in 1862. Both Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. credited this book with shaping their world views. The fuller text is as follows:
“There is no wealth but life. Life, including all its powers of love, of joy, and of admiration. That country is the richest which nourishes the greatest numbers of noble and happy human beings; that man is richest, who, having perfected the functions of his own life to the utmost, has also the widest helpful influence, both personal, and by means of his possessions, over the lives of others.”
Ruskin was a mentor of preeminent English designer, William Morris, so to render his words in anything other than a lettering designed by Morris was simply out of the question. It should work with just about any interior or architectural style.
