ABOUT THIS CARVING
Full Inscription: The world is but outdoors. - Henry David Thoreau
Origins: Please consider this carving as your personal invitation from Mr. Thoreau himself to spend more time outdoors. A particularly relevant thought in a world where seemingly fewer people are truly engaged in the broader natural world around them. For those who have already determined to be involved in the world outdoors, this carving will serve as a beautiful and constant reminder to fulfill that passion. (For those not yet so engaged, we hope it will serve as encouragement.)
The lettering is a circa 1891 design by preeminent English designer and printer William Morris who is broadly recognized as a founder of the English Arts & Crafts Movement. Morris and his colleagues, including renowned illustrator, Walter Crane, were apparently influenced by Thoreau’s writings. In Crane’s 1907 book, An Artist’s Reminiscences, he recounts a visit to America during which, at his insistence, relatives of Ralph Waldo Emerson took him by buggy to visit the site of Thoreau’s cabin at Walden Pond.
