Emerson - Scatter Joy Carving

GTI-RE027-6-CV

ABOUT THIS CARVING

Full Inscription: Scatter Joy (Emerson)

Origins: We found the concept of “scattering joy” in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s The Conduct of Life (1860) essays. It is thought to be one of Emerson’s most successful publications and has been reprinted in many languages.

Here is the full line of text from which we drew Emerson’s great thought and carved it as a beautiful motto for daily living: “There is no beautifier of complexion, or form, or behavior, like the wish to scatter joy and not pain around us.” Given the never-ending need for more joy in our world, we hope we’re helping Emerson’s concept to find its way into an ever growing number of hearts and minds!

Emerson was a Boston native, so we started there looking for design inspiration for our carving. Happily, we found both the ornament and the letterform in a circa 1900 type catalog of a Boston type foundry. We hope you’ll feel as we do that the lettering and ornament convey a sense of “scattering joy” as much as we did when we first happened across them.

Recommended Finish: We really like this carving in our Vintage Cherry finish because it works so well with the lighter, upbeat tone of Emerson's great thought.
