Origins: Thoreau – In Wildness Carving
Walking is an essay Thoreau delivered as a lecture more often than any others. He thought of it as one of his most important works – and it is regarded as such by those engaged in any environmental movement or organization. We believe the single most famous, important and enduring line from it is the one we have carved.
We hoped to create a carving that held broad and timeless design appeal and also conveyed a feeling of the outdoors. While U.S.-based Henry David Thoreau was certainly an early leader and thinker in the environmental field, after reading more about the environmental views of preeminent English designer William Morris, we realized we had a great opportunity to bring the two together. Drawing from both sides of “the great pond” we combined Thoreau’s great thought with the great and universally-appealing design style of William Morris.
In any case, it is one of our favorite environmental “great thoughts” and was one of the first six carvings we wanted to create. It is now our forty-second completed design and took us three years and some thirty design iterations before we were fully content with the result.
